The fauna of Kurgan region is rather diverse.

There are wood, steppe and forest-steppe species, which include:

Mammals - 64 species;
Birds - 252- 268 species;
Reptiles - 6 species;
Amphibians - 8 species;
Fish - 27 species.

18 mammal species are hunted objects, 1 species - Russian musk-rat is registered in the Russian Red book.
165 - 170 bird species are nested here and 70 species fly through the region.
During autumnal flights up to 70 thousand birds gather on Makushino game reserve lakes. In the territory of the region one can meet 24 bird species registered in the Russian Red book, including 11 species which are under a global threat of disappearance in Europe.
In the territory of the region there are 5 insect species, registered in the Russian Red book.

Hunting resources
Despite of considerable transformation of natural hunting lands, and a strong antropogeneous press on the environment, the situation with the hunting resources remains rather satisfactory if to compare with other regions. At the same time, for last two years, because of the unfavorable climatic conditions, the number of roe deer, elks, squirrels and some other animals has decreased.

Fish resources
The regional fish fund includes 2878 lakes, with a total area of 275 thousand hectare. In 1998 606 lakes were used to fish.

On 22.08.99 Government of Kurgan region passed the decree ¹ 454 "On the statement of Kurgan regional State natural (zoological reserves) regulations", according to which 196 lakes on the area of 20,6 thousand hectares have a special order of use. As a result, extra areas will be given to trade and amateur fishery.
Local trade species are golden and argentine crucian, bream, roach, pike (table 19).
